Sea Water Desalination

Scientist with netsClean Water Act

There are no federal regulations specific to Desalination Intakes. However, the Clean Water Act, Section§316(b) is applicable to all direct intakes and requires the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assure that the location, design, construction and capacity of cooling water intake structures reflect the best technology available (BTA) for minimizing adverse environmental impact. Additionally, local regulations vary greatly by state and municipality and typically involve a number of agencies.
