Marine Renewable Resources

Offshore WindQualifications

Kleinschmidt is one of the United States' leading hydropower engineering and licensing firms and has designed and licensed numerous hydroelectric projects throughout the country.  In addition to hydroelectric power, Kleinschmidt is involved in other aspects of the energy industry and has performed a number of investigations related to the development of other renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, and biomass.  Kleinschmidt has also been involved in coastal engineering and permitting projects for decades – mainly related to docks and harbors for coastal and island communities throughout the state of Maine.  We have also provided engineering support to the open ocean aquaculture industry.  As Kleinschmidt's clients in the traditional renewable energy industry have started to look into moving to coastal and offshore locations, we have started to merge some of our energy and coastal capabilities in preparation of this next “wave” of offshore development.  Underwater Turbine

Kleinschmidt helped develop one of the first FERC hydrokinetic pilot license applications for a proposed tidal project in the East River in New York City (see project description below).  We have also helped a number of developers with initial feasibility assessments, reviews of applicable technologies, and preliminary permit applications. Over the past few years, Kleinschmidt has been an active participant in the development of regulations for this emerging industry. In addition to our regulatory expertise, we offer environmental and marine science capabilities and civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering expertise to developers seeking to develop renewable energy projects in the marine environment. Please contact Tim Oakes, Renewables Group Leader, at (717) 687-7211 for assistance with your project.
