Peter Bastien joined Kleinschmidt Associates' Engineering Department in 2001 as a Senior Civil Engineer. He received a BS degree in Plant and Soil Sciences in 1980 and a BS degree in Civil Engineering in 1982 from the University of Maine. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Maine and the State of Rhode Island.

Mr. Bastien’s responsibilities include engineering project management, design, and construction management for a major expansion of a large fish hatchery, restoration of fishways and fish habitat areas, stream bank stabilization, stream channel design, habitat improvement efforts in and along waterways, wetland restoration, development of recreational facilities, dam removal and decommissioning, as well as providing engineering support for hydropower, environmental, and industrial design projects located along the east coast.

His experience also includes specialized management training on the principles of Edward Deming and development of team leader and facilitator skills to improve communications between team members, project participants, and the general public. Application of these principles required teamwork, problem identification, development of solutions, participation and implementation, training and follow-up skills.

Prior to coming to Kleinschmidt, Mr. Bastien had over 19 years experience with a worldwide leader in the pulp and paper industry in the design and management of large capital projects involving building expansions, landfill expansions and closures, wetlands mitigation, paper machine upgrades, site planning and design and, waste water and water treatment. Project management for this work included design, management of consultants and contractors, cost estimating, budgeting, cost management, purchasing, equipment start up and training, and regular interaction with local, state, and federal agencies.
